Comment Quick Start for Students

This quick start guide to Comment will help you learn the basic features of Comment.  For more help with any function, click the help button in the upper right corner of any Comment page.

Setting up your Comment account

You will need the Comment Access Code and Class Code given to you by your instructor.  You will need these codes only once.  After you have set up your account, you will simply log in with your username and password.

1.      Go to the Comment home page (URL above).

2.      Click the Go button in the registration box at the top of the screen.

3.      Enter your Access Code and Class Code in the boxes.

4.      Click Continue.

5.      Enter the requested information for your account in the next form.  (Be sure to choose a username that is appropriate for your class setting, as your teacher and classmates will see your username throughout Comment.)

6.      Click Continue, and you will go to a Welcome popup.

7.      Click Continue once more, and you will enter your class’s Comment site.

Logging into Comment after you have set up your account

1.     Go to the Comment home page.

2.     Enter your username and password in the members box at the top of the screen.

3.     Click Go, and you’ll be taken to your class.  If you belong to more than one Comment class, you’ll get a popup with the list of your classes, and you can choose the one you wish to work in.

Uploading a document to Comment

Note: You must upload one document at a time.

1.     Save a copy of your document in HTML format (web page format).

2.     Make sure that the HTML copy of your document is single-spaced and does not contain images.

3.     Select Upload a new document from the documents & comments tab of your class’s Comment site.

4.     Click Browse and navigate to the file you wish to upload.

5.     Enter a description of your document in the Description field.  This could be the paper’s title or subject, or some information your instructor asks you to put here.

6.     Enter a note for your reviewers in the Note to peers field.  You can use this note to tell your peer reviewers what aspects of your paper you’d like their comments to focus on.

7.     Click Upload.

8.     Click Continue. You’ll return to your class’s documents & comments tab, and you’ll see your paper there, where your teacher and classmates can now read and comment on it.


Writing comments on a document

1.     Select the paper you want to comment on from the list on the documents & comments tab by clicking its name in the FILE NAME column.

2.     Click on any word, punctuation mark, or paragraph marker in the document in order to insert a comment at that point in the document.  The compose comment window will open.

3.     Type your comment in the box.

4.     Click Save comment, and your comment will be saved in the document.

5.     If you do not see your comment appear to the right of the document, check to see whether the top of the grey column to the right of the document says, “comments currently hidden.”  If so, click the Show comments link near the upper right corner of the page.

Viewing comments received on your document

1.     Select your document from the list on the documents & comments tab by clicking its name in the FILE NAME column.

2.     If you do not see comments to the right of the document, check to see whether the top of the grey column to the right of the document says, “comments currently hidden.”  If so, click the Show comments link near the upper right corner of the page.

3.     If you wish to print your document and comments, click See print view near the top of the document.

4.     In the print view, click Print to open your printer dialog and print your document.
