Document 14: Editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch , April 24, 1922

Introduction:

This editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is representative of the publicity that accompanied the Children's Crusade. Images and articles abounded about the pilgrimage of the wives and children of political prisoners in newspapers across the nation. This document shows O'Hare's success in reaching out to middle America to promote her cause.

The text in the image is as follows:

Eugene V. Debs With the Wives and Children of Political Prisoners Whom Mrs. Kate O'Hare Is Leading on Pilgrimage to Washington

The photograph was made when Mrs. O'Hare and her delegation of wives and children of political prisoners, convicted during the war for violation of war statues, visited Debs' home at Terre Haute. The pilgrimage began in St. Louis, where the participants assembled, and it is Mrs. O'Hare's plan to have her followers call on the President when they reach Washington to appeal, personally, to him to free their husbands and fathers. Debs and O'Hare are indicated by white crosses. Others in the photograph are Debs' neighbors, who were with him when he received the delegation.
