Middle East Studies (Minor)

Middle East studies investigates human cultures in the region of the Middle East and North Africa and in areas geographically and historically  connected to it, such as Central Asia, Spain and other parts of Africa.

If you minor in Middle East studies at Saint Louis University, you’ll learn about the ancient, medieval and contemporary history of the Middle East — giving you an unusual breadth of study — while gaining knowledge about the arts, politics, religious traditions and business environments.  

Middle East studies students at SLU complete 16 credit hours of courses in the subject area. In addition, you will complete two semesters of university-level Arabic or another language based in the Middle East (or show qualification of advanced competency). For your capstone, you will also present a research paper written for an elective course in the minor.

Though international travel is not required for the minor, SLU encourages studying abroad to further your understanding of the region. This minor is also offered on our Madrid campus.

Internships and Careers

If you choose to minor in Middle East studies at SLU, you will learn about of a part of the world that is as central to ancient civilizations as it is to modern global politics, business and culture. You will be able to apply this minor’s knowledge to positions in the legal, business, education, religious, political and medical fields.

Students who have pursued a Middle East studies minor have gone on to graduate programs in Middle East studies and to diplomatic and political work at government or nonprofit international agencies.
