Magnetic resonance imaging is a medical imaging technique that uses a large magnet
and radio waves to create clear pictures of internal body structures. MRI provides
excellent contrast between the different soft tissues of the body and is especially
useful in imaging the brain, spine, joints, muscles and other structures.
One hundred percent of graduates from SLU’s MRI program pass the board certification exam and are placed in jobs in the field.
Major in Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Offered at SLU's Doisy College of Health Sciences, Saint Louis University’s MRI program
trains you to work with patients to obtain high-quality images in a safe and effective
manner. It is one of only two programs of its kind in the country.
If you choose to major in magnetic resonance imaging at SLU, you will learn how to
operate imaging, laboratory and computer instrumentation and to perform quality control
procedures. You’ll also practice an empathetic and instructional approach to patient
care.
Students studying magnetic resonance imaging at SLU participate in a core health sciences
curriculum with an interprofessional focus. You’ll choose from several curriculum
tracks, including pre-physician assistant and pre-medicine. You will also take part
in a 12-month intensive MRI curriculum that includes 1,300 hours of clinical practicum.
Students in SLU’s MRI degree program have opportunities to conduct research and produce
projects and papers that are acceptable for publication and could be presented at
professional conferences. You’re also encouraged to join and participate in the functions
of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
In addition to University-level scholarships, sophomore, junior and senior MRI students
are also eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Doisy College of Health Sciences
Alumni Association.
A bachelor’s degree in magnetic resonance imaging prepares graduates for careers as
MRI technologists. Jobs are available in medical and surgical hospitals, freestanding
clinics, physician offices and research institutions.
The faculty and staff in the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapeutics
are dedicated to each program and the scholarship of all students. All faculty are
credentialed and provide a wealth of expertise and knowledge to each program.
The MRI Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic
Technology (JRCERT), in cooperation with the American College of Radiology (ACR) and
the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).
The MRI Program has an advisory committee consisting of clinical supervisors, managers,
and directors in the health care profession. The committee contributes recommendations
for enhancing the program; as well as assessment of the program. The MRI program is
pending JRCERT accreditation:
Students in SLU’s MRI program gain practical experience in clinical settings around
the St. Louis metro area, including SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, Barnes-Jewish
Hospital, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital and the VA St. Louis Health
Care System.
