The diverse curriculum of the master’s in French includes courses in Francophone studies, film, women writers and teaching methodologies, as well as courses in French literature from the Middle Ages to the present. The program has a record of preparing students to continue on to doctoral studies.
SLU’s annual French and Spanish Graduate and Undergraduate Student Symposium, generally held in March or early April, offers student an exciting opportunity to present and discuss research and areas of interest. Presenters are invited to submit their papers for consideration for publication in the electronic journal, Confluence: A Romance Language Journal of Saint Louis University.
To graduate with an M.A. in French from SLU, you’ll need to complete 30 credit hours of coursework, a final project or written exam, and a final oral examination.

Students who want to be considered for an assistantship must submit their application by Feb. 1 for the fall semester.
The final deadline to apply for the fall semester is July 1 for U.S. applicants and May 1 for international applicants. The final deadline to apply for the spring semester is Dec. 1 for U.S. applicants and Oct. 1 for international applicants.
The examining committee takes into account each item of the application.
M.A. students from SLU have studied in France, Québec City (Université Laval) and elsewhere. Upon approval, up to six hours of graduate-level credit can be applied to the M.A. in French. Interested students should speak to their adviser. Graduate seminars in French are also offered in the summer at Saint Louis University.
