SLUUT TEAM HISTORY
It all started back in the year of ‘98 with Julian, Nate, Kringes,
Spitz, Chris, Tom, Mark, Maria and Kasdorf.
It was a group of guys with the love for the spectacular game that we
call ultimate. They are the ones that
resurrected ultimate as a student organization on the campus of SLU. Officially the team name was SLUT
(overlapping U’s). Oh, many a day was
spent playing around with sexual innuendos.
Even something as simple as MVP took on new meaning.
By the fall of ’99 there were quite a few freshmen to come
out and practice. Under Julian’s
leadership many were beginning to be sculpted into fine young players. Notably, the finest of this newest class was
one Paul Grant. That year was considered
to be a building year for SLU. There was
only one tournament appearance for us that year and that was at Wash U’s Huck
Finn tourney. It was a poor showing of
0-4. A memorable moment was when Czuba
went ape on a foul call against Rose Hulman.
Let’s not forget how Julian manage to somehow out jump five people in
the end zone even when he was the shortest one down there by at least five
inches.
The next season brought in the current stars of the
team. This freshman class brought much
more talent and dedication than the previous year. Again under Julian’s leadership, we were
beginning to become a competitive team.
We went to several tournaments that year, but still managed to leave
every tournament with a losing record.
We held our own at the sectional tournament in spring even though we
played savage. This was an indication of
the growth in the coming years.
Things started to turn around during the ’01-’02 season. This was when the team started to evenly
match many teams in the Ozark section.
This year brought us a changing of the guard as well. Paul Grant took over the leadership role of
the team. It was a momentous year for
women as well. This was the inaugural
season for SLULU under the leadership of Kate Oland. SLUUT did well at the tournament appearances
throughout the year including a strong performance at Mardis Gras. Unfortunately, the year was plagued with
little dedication. Thus, we didn’t have
enough people to send to sectionals.
Enter the ’02-’03 season, there was question about which
direction the team should take. Some
wanted the dedication to make the regional tournament in spring while others
did not want to become that serious. Paul
Fitzgibbons took over as team president.
Kevin Cunningham became the team captain with the assistance of
Grant. Under this leadership, SLUUT had
an outstanding year. More talent joined
the team among the senior class. Early
in the year, the team sent a co-ed team to Whitewater and came back with a 6-1
finish. We had a great success playing
against Kansas and Mizzou at a tournament in St. Louis. We were no longer a team that was easily
beaten. We were a team that was gaining
respect quickly. SLUUT finish the fall
season with a strong showing at Harvest Moon.
The spring season is the season that counts in the college level. We had success at tournaments but could not
seem to beat Washington University, Kansas and Arkansas. We knew that these teams were the elite of
the Ozark sectional. Unfortunately, we
had little success against this teams including the sectional tournament. We still ended up with a winning record at sectionals
and placed 5th. Although we
qualified for the regional tournament we did not send a team.
