SLU Versus Lindenwood University Scrimmage Notes (23 Feb 06)

SLU finally got to play some lacrosse in moderately warm weather. The Billikens faced off in a scrimmage against Lindenwood Lions. LU used the scrimmage to get some of their younger players more experience for their upcoming tournament this weekend. SLU used the scrimmage as a chance to continue to work on offense and to come together as a team. As the game was just a scrimmage, I will not refer to specific scores or goal scorers.

SLU came out strong on offense, but simply could not finish their shots and drives. Lindenwood’s defense and their goalie were a large contributing factor in SLU’s inability to put the ball in the back of the net. About midway through the first quarter the Lions suddenly took control and went on a scoring run. SLU eventually regained composure and began controlling the tempo of the game again. As the half ended, SLU’s defense had settled in, but the offense still had not found their rhythm.

In the second half, Lindenwood start strong and expanded their lead with some excellent isolation plays and strong play from the attack. Suddenly about midway through the third quarter, SLU’s offense began to click and the Billikens started scoring in bunches. The scoring was spread out among several players and off of several different looks. The Billikens finished the game on a 6 – 1 run, but still found themselves one goal behind Lindenwood as time expired.

SLU, as a team, made huge improvements and really had gelled as one cohesive unit during the game. Freshmen Matt Brennan, Phil Fasano, and Joe Joyce all stepped their games up to the next level. These three freshmen are all positioned to be major contributors on the offensive end. While there is always room for improvement, SLU appears to be right at where they need to be to make a push for a GRLC Division B Championship and a USL MDIA National Tournament berth.
