SLU Versus the University of Arkansas Game Notes (12 Feb 06)
Saint Louis University began its quest for a national tournament appearance today at the AB Soccer Park in freezing cold temperatures. The team came out quickly with the newly revamped attack creating opportunities in bunches. Ryan Van Dyke scored two quick goals, but had to leave the game after suffering a broken finger in the first quarter. SLU controlled the ball on their offensive end for the majority of the quarter securing a 4-1 lead.
The Billikens lost two additional midfielders to equipment problems and penalties in the second quarter and were forced to slow the game down. The team executed strongly and dominated on the clear. As the halftime horn sounded, SLU had a 5-2 lead.
The second half was more of SLU slowing the tempo down. In the waning minutes of the fourth quarter Arkansas was slowly making a come back. The game ultimately ended with an 8-6 victory. It was a physical game that included over 20 penalties. SLU looked brilliant at times and at other times failed to execute as well as they should. Overall, though, it was a good opening to the 2006 campaign.
There were a few SLU players that really stood out. Sophomore Jeff Steitz scored a goal and had a very impressive three assists. Senior Brian Moore after taking over at attack for junior Ryan Van Dyke impressed everyone with his solid play earning a goal for himself in the process. Ryan’s twin brother Cory contributed two goals and an assist from his slot on the wing. Defensively freshman Mike Van Tiem was dominating on both his close defense and his clearing ability. Mike is a flashy player whose solid play is difficult not to notice. Overall, it was a great effort by SLU and was a good start to the year. There is plenty of room for improvement, but all the makings of a great team are present. Next game SLU will be challenging a solid Auburn opponent from the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference in what may be their most difficult game of the year.
