Philanthropy

The Gamma Tau chapter is proud to announce that we just delivered a check for $10,000 to Girls Inc of St. Louis!

Girls Inc is an inner-city after school program that aims to develop young women mentally, physically, and socially. It offers tutoring, classes, field-trips, mentoring, and many other fun activities for young girls. They were extremely appreciative and look forward to doing more activities with the Gamma Tau chapter.

Camp Gamma Phi
- our principal philanthropy.  Camp Gamma Phi is an all  day event beginning with music and a barbecue and ending with a number of raffles and door prizes. Every dollar we raise at Camp Gamma Phi is double by the International Gamma Phi Beta Foundation.  This year Camp Gamma Phi is going to under-go some major changes in hopes of raising even more money for Girls Inc. This year the chapter is planning a weeks worth of philanthropic activities and aims to get the entire campus involved. The week is scheduled for the second week in September and the chapter would love to do an alumnae pre-view event for alumnae and their families on the Sunday before the week- look for more information in the next issue of the Gamma Tau Quarterly.

The International Gamma Phi Beta Philanthropy is Special Camping for Girls. Adopted at our convention in 1929. Camping for girls can adapt to the current needs of society, as recent studies have applauded the positive benefits of camping experiences for children at risk.  In this endeavor, the Sorority works in collaboration with Camp Fire USA as well as local groups to provide experiences and resources that build spiritual, mental, and social resiliency in girls.

Locally, the Gamma Tau Chapter has entered a joint effort with the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter to support Girls Inc. Girls Inc. is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. For over 55 years, Girls Inc has provided vital educational programs to millions of American girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Girls, Inc. is a United Way Organization that helps girls ages five to eighteen in a variety of areas. Because there are three sites in the St. Louis area, the number of girls that are affected by the efforts of Girls, Inc. are outstanding! The volunteers help with homework, play games, coach sports, monitor the playground, teach, go on fieldtrips and much more! The collegians and alumnae of Gamma Phi had a pizza party with some of the girls at Girls, Inc. and it was a real success! Gamma Tau is looking forward to building better bonds with the Girl, Inc. family and planning future events. To volunteer at Girls, Inc. please email us!

Other Philanthropic activities we take part in including:

Fall Mission Trip: over fall break, Gamma Phi's travel to the impoverished Appalachian Mountains to help residents prepare their homes for the rough winter ahead.

The Big's and Little's Program of Greater St. Louis: we host Halloween and Easter parties for the kids of this program. In addition, several of our sisters have a "little" of their own.

Soup Kitchen: Sisters attend every Tuesday with the men of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding: a method of therapy for handicapped or ill children.
