M.A. in Spanish Summer Program

Working professionals can earn their M.A. in Spanish during the summer.

Enroll in graduate classes that run from late June to the end of July and complete the full degree over the course of three or four summers. Focus on your job during the school year and spend the summers in linguistic and cultural immersion while in Madrid.

SLU-Madrid is a community of scholars who care. Our Spanish faculty —who hold Ph.D.'s from leading European and U.S. universities— offer you a prestigious Jesuit education in the country where it was developed. You’ll learn to research, to motivate, to critique, to read and to think, all while reconnecting with your passion for teaching Hispanic culture and the Spanish language.

Summer Law Program

Saint Louis University’s School of Law’s ABA-approved Summer Law Program in Madrid offers six weeks of rewarding comparative and international law education in one of the most exciting, historical and culturally rich cities in the world.

Earn up to six credit hours in courses taught by Spanish and American professors. Classroom instruction is in English and the anticipated enrollment is typically 22 students. The program includes visits to various Spanish legal entities, including Spain's constitutional and supreme courts. In addition, students may take a non-credit Introduction to Spanish class or an advanced Spanish for the professional settings class, at no additional cost.

Contact Sidney Watson, J.D., director of the Madrid Summer Program, at sidney.watson@slu.edu, or Ira H. Trako, J.D., assistant director of the Center for International and Comparative Law, at ira.trako@slu.edu for additional information and eligibility.

TESOL Certification

Interested in teaching English anywhere in the world? SLU-Madrid will help prepare you to do so through its certificate in “Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages” (TESOL). The eight-credit certificate can be earned through completing coursework during our first Summer Session and the practicum experience in July. Find out more through contacting Anne McCabe, Ph.D., at anne.mccabe@slu.edu.

Teen Camp: Extreme Science Experience

With more than 15 years of running camps for teens, SLU-Madrid will once again partner with Colegio San José in Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz, Spain) to offer the most innovative camp in Spain: “Extreme Science Experience.”

This adventure into language learning through science and technology takes place during the first two weeks of July. Its goal is to promote the understanding of the world we live in and the languages we speak. The camp is open to both English and Spanish speakers, aged 12 to 15, but spaces are limited. For more information, contact Hamish Binns at hamish.binns@slu.edu.

Summer Theatre in Spanish

The Summer Theatre in Spanish program offers students of all levels an opportunity to increase fluency and confidence in spoken Spanish by the best and most enjoyable means: acting. In Theatre Workshop you will rehearse scenes and skits chosen specifically for your individual level, culminating in an on campus performance. It is supplemented by two Spanish courses, one on conversation and pronunciation and the other on modern Spanish drama. Contact Cary Barney at cary.barney@slu.edu for more information.

Why Study in the Summer?

As the capital of Spain, Madrid is lively all year round, particularly in the summertime. Good weather means outdoor festivals and concerts, ample opportunities to explore its expansive parks and gardens and alluring day trips to nearby nature reserves or Spain’s most emblematic cities. Cultural programming kicks it up a notch in the summer, assuring your time outside of the classroom is enriching and engaging. And if you’re a non-traditional study abroad major or student athlete, we’ve got you covered.

Opportunities for student athletes

No Spain, no gain. If you’re a student athlete, you may not have the chance to study abroad during the sports season. Join SLU-Madrid during the summer to earn credits towards your degree, while keeping up with your training.

Our sports coordinator advises student athletes where to work out, run or swim. Competitive swimmers, for example, are invited to continue their high level of training at Spain’s most prestigious aquatics center, Real Canoe Natación Club. SLU-Madrid is committed to accommodating student athletes of all levels. For more information, contact César Rioja directly at cesar.rioja@slu.edu

Real-world Experience in the Health Science Programs

SLU-Madrid’s commitment to internationalizing the health professions received special recognition in 2013 for its outstanding program in international nursing.

Pre-medical students are encouraged to gain clinical experiences in preparation for applying to U.S. medical schools. SLU-Madrid offers this in Spanish through shadowing a physician’s daily activities at one of Madrid’s hospitals or health care clinics.

SLU also offers unique summer programs for students pursuing degrees in other areas of the health science. Our athletic training program places students into field internships with Spain’s national sports teams, and we also offer nursing students a clinical immersion in hospitals in Spain.

For the pre-med shadowing program, students must have an overall GPA and a math and science GPA of at least 3.2 or higher to be considered; students must also be proficient in Spanish. For information about any of these programs, contact our Health Sciences Program Director, Tania de la Fuente, Ph.D., at tania.delafuente@slu.edu
