University Health Plan and Billing Procedures

Saint Louis University requires all full-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students to have basic health insurance. The plan offered by SLU is known as the University Health Plan (UHP). All full time students on campus must enroll in or waive out of the UHP each academic year.

Instructions to Waive or Enroll Through Aetna Online

If you have difficulty waiving or enrolling in the University Health Plan, call Aetna Customer Service at 1-877-381-3544.

You must be registered in classes as a full-time student for Aetna's system to recognize you. Please allow two business days from registering full time to attempt to waive or enroll. Please also make sure to use your full nine digit Banner ID (including the leading 000) when utilizing Aetna's site.

Waiving UHP Coverage

If you already have other (non-University Health Plan) health insurance coverage in effect, then you may submit a waiver request online through Aetna Student Health. You must have your insurance information available when you submit requests, as you will be asked detailed information about your existing coverage.

The deadline to waive or enroll in the UHP is September 30 for the fall term or February 14 for the spring term. Any full-time students who have not waived by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in the UHP.  No changes can be made outside of open enrollment, and waiver requests will be accepted by Aetna after the deadline.  

If you waive in the fall term, you will not need to waive again for the spring. You only need to waive once per academic year.

Additional Coverage and Exceptions

  • Though it is not required, you may remain on the plan through the summer if you are full time in the spring and will be again in the fall.
  • Part-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students are strongly encouraged to have health insurance coverage, but it is not required. Visit Aetna Student Health for a list of eligible groups or call 314-977-7168 to find out if you are eligible to voluntarily enroll in the University Health Plan.

Billing Procedures and Providers

  • You do not need to have the University Health Plan to be seen at the Student Health Center. All of our physicians are in the SLUCare network. The SLUCare website has a list of all plans they have a contract with.
  • Dr. Nancy Z. Delaney is our primary internal medicine provider and is at SHC Monday through Friday. Since Dr. Delaney works almost solely at SHC and would not be an option for most provider members, she is suppressed from some insurance company dictionaries. If your insurance representative does not see her name in their list of in-network providers, give them Dr. Thomas J. Olsen’s name. If he is in network, so is she.
  • You are responsible for paying any co-payments, co-insurance or deductibles outlined by your insurance policy.
  • If you have an out-of-state plan that does not cover claims from our SLUCare providers, you can ask them if it is possible to set up an “away” plan while you are here at school. Many insurance providers will set up exceptions ahead of time that will allow you to be seen here and have claims covered.
  • Co-payments and payment for medication received at Student Health Center are paid at the time of service. All other amounts owed will be billed to you after your insurance is billed. Please determine the best billing address for us to keep in our system at the time of service. Our billing system does not interface with Banner, so the address you have with the University for your student account can be different than the address you give us for medical bills. We do not bill for any of our services through Student Financial Services.
  • If laboratory testing is sent out, the billing for that laboratory service is billed through Quest or LabCorp. There is point of care testing done at the time of service for a variety of tests, however the majority of our specimens are sent to Quest or LabCorp. Please contact your insurance provider to find out which lab they will cover, and let our staff know before your visit which lab you prefer.
  • Depending on your plan, your benefits may be different for mental health,
    physical or occupational therapy, dietitian services or a nurse practitioner. Prior to scheduling your visit at Student Health, you should check with your health insurance plan to see if you have access to health care services at SLUCare and learn the specific benefits of your coverage.
  • Always bring your insurance card to appointments at the Student Health Center, even if you have the University Health Plan. This will insure proper and timely billing for received services. It is important to always keep your insurance card with you at all times.
