Calling all Billikens: Your ideas are needed to help make SLU better, stronger and more innovative as part of the GrowingSLU program. 

About GrowingSLU

  • A $1 million gift to the University has been set aside to fund selected ideas
  • Ideas must focus on revenue generation within the University's general operating budget and align with the University's strategic plan, MAGIS
  • All current students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit one or more ideas
  • Teams solutions are strongly encouraged
  • Selected ideas will receive a $1,000 cash prize and an invitation to a private reception with University President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D.
  • All ideas will be reviewed and no idea is too small for consideration
  • Information sessions will be held as an opportunity for the SLU community to learn more


February 2016 - Begin Collecting Ideas

March 25, 2016 - Deadline for Ideas

  • Initial ideas will be vetted by the GrowingSLU advisory committee

April 22, 2016 - Selected Ideas Will Supply Business Plans

  • Ideas will be narrowed down and a business plan will be requested for those that move to the next step
  • Where possible, University resources (Business and Finance, Provost Office, ITS, etc.) will be available to help review business plan and proof of concept

Late Summer 2016 - Deadline for Business Proposals

  • Rough draft due July 29
  • Final draft due August 19
  • Final business proposals will be reviewed by GrowingSLU advisory committee

Fall 2016 - Announce Funded Initiatives and Proposal Awards

  • Successful proposals will be funded, including start-up costs
  • Cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded the individual or teams of successful proposals

May 2017 - Review Funded Initiatives and Award Successful Ideas

  • The GrowingSLU advisory committee will rate the initiatives according to outcomes
  • Cash prizes will be awarded to individuals/teams based on initiative success:
    • 1st place - $5,000
    • 2nd place - $3,000
    • 3rd place - $1,000 

After one year, the initiatives will be reviewed to determine whether the business case was successful. If the desired results were not achieved, any funding associated with the idea will be stopped.
