III. ERIC Information , the ERIC Database, and the E*Subscribe Database
Background: The Educational Information Resources Center (ERIC) (http://www.eric.ed.gov/), established in 1966, is a national information system that provides access to a vast education-related literature.
ERIC consists of 16 clearinghouses that focus on specific subject areas within education, and adjunct clearinghouses and support components.
See descriptions of and links to the clearinghouses, especially for "Higher Education" and "Information and Technology."
ERIC Database: Access to the ERIC database is available from a number of Web sites:
ERIC-Sponsored Internet Access to the ERIC Database (http://www.eric.ed.gov/searchdb/dbchart_s.html)
Since ERIC is supported by the U.S. government (i.e., U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement, and the National Library of Education), these sites provide free access to the database.
However, the dates of coverage and the searching capabilities may vary from one site to another. Searchers will find it helpful to consult the free Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (http://www.ericfacility.net/extra/pub/thessearch.cfm) for search terms and relationships.
[Note: The hard copy equivalent of the ERIC Database consists of Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and Resources in Education (RIE).
Check the MERLIN catalog for Pius Library holdings information.]
Pius Library subscribes to the commercial OVID version of the ERIC database. See the ERIC Database Guide (http://www.slu.edu/libraries/pius/guides/dbguides/ovidericgde.pdf) for search tips.
- Search ERIC Database via OVID (http://www.eric.ed.ogov/searchdb/searchdb.html)
It is available to anyone on the U.S. campuses of Saint Louis University from offices, dorms, computer labs, and the libraries.
Remote access to Web-based databases such as ERIC is restricted to current Saint Louis University (SLU) students, faculty, and staff.
See Off-Campus Access to Subscription-Based Electronic Resources on the Pius Library Web site's Electronic Access page (http://www.slu.edu/libraries/pius/libinfo/offcamp.html) for access instructions.
E*Subscribe: Produced by the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS), this resource provides approximately 80% of all ERIC documents (EDs) indexed in the ERIC database from 1993 forward in PDF.
It is searchable by topic, author, title, etc., but is most useful for its "Express Search" feature which supports searching by ED number only. Access to this database, both on and off campus, is the same as for the OVID version of ERIC, described above.

IV. Periodicals Related to Teaching and Higher Education
The periodicals listed below address college teaching, teacher education, and higher education in general, as well as various aspects of teaching in individual disciplines mainly--although not exclusively--at the college level.
Links to Web sites with descriptive information are available for many of the periodicals.
While some of the Web sites are not as current as would be desirable, at least they provide some useful information.
In a few cases, the link is to the publisher's home page rather than directly to the site of a specific title; navigation from that point on should be relatively straightforward.
Some of the periodical Web sites provide links to disciplinary resources related to teaching in their respective fields; see section IX. Selected Disciplinary Web Sites Related to Teaching of this guide for more such resources.
[Note: Periodicals are notorious for title changes. The titles listed here are current titles only!]
The periodical titles held by the Saint Louis University Libraries are coded as follows: HSC=Health Sciences Center Library; LAW=Omer Poos Law Library; PIUS=Pius XII Memorial Library.
Titles available via the Web at no charge are coded ONLINE.
To determine the call number location and extent of library holdings for individual titles, consult MERLIN, the Saint Louis University Libraries' electronic catalog (Telnet login = library; World Wide Web).
The records for the Health Sciences Center and Omer Poos Law Libraries are complete in MERLIN.
Pius Library records for current subscriptions may be found in MERLIN.
For older or discontinued titles, visit/call the library to check the Inactive Titles printouts.

V. Web-Based Course Management Tools
Adaptation of the Internet--and the World Wide Web in particular--for pedagogical purposes is widespread.
Web-based course management tools that integrate a number of features into a single package were developed primarily with distance learning in mind.
Frequently, however, these resources are used to enhance the traditional classroom learning situation.
(See Online Educational Delivery Applications: A Web Tool for Comparative Analysis (http://www.ctt.bc.ca/landonline/) for evaluation information as well as links to Web sites about the major software packages.)
The program in use at Saint Louis University is WebCT (http://www.webct.com/wyw/), an application developed at the University of British Columbia.
Adopted initially as the means by which the Saint Louis University School of Nursing would deliver its new distance learning degree program, WebCT also has been incorporated into many campus-based courses across the disciplines.
Among WebCT's features are a conferencing system, on-line chat, student progress tracking, group project organization, student self-evaluation, grade maintenance and distribution, access control, navigation tools, auto-marked quizzes, electronic mail, automatic index generation, course calendar, student homepages, and course content searches.
Saint Louis University instructors wishing to use WebCT in their courses should contact Kim Scharringhausen
(ITS) at 977-3522. To read about WebCT at Saint Louis University, visit the ITS WebCT Web site (http://webct.slu.edu).

VI. Teaching and Teaching-Related Centers
The Saint Louis University Center for Teaching Excellence (http://www.slu.edu/centers/cte/) was established on July 1, 1997, building on the foundation laid by the Graduate School's Teaching Resource Center. Other institutions also have established teaching centers; information about many of the centers and their programs--including links to a wide diversity of teaching resources--are available on the Web. Selected teaching center Web sites identified below are followed by links to comprehensive lists of related sites.

VII. Writing Across the Curriculum
The purpose of Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), known at some institutions as Writing Across the University or Writing in the Disciplines, is to integrate and increase opportunities for student writing throughout the undergraduate curriculum. The ways in which this is accomplished often reflects the types of writing common to individual disciplines. Many WAC programs--and writing centers--have established Web sites that describe their programs, feature writing-intensive course syllabi, provide examples of student writing exercises and assignments, and address issues such as teacher evaluation of student writing. Selected resources are listed below; these pages generally link back to their respective institutional WAC home pages--many of which contain links to still other WAC Web sites.
