In the News....

Compendex from Engineering Village 2

I just want to remind everyone that we subscribe to Compendex, which is considered to be the world’s # 1 engineering database in the world, but for some reason it is not getting the usage that one would expect.  I would encourage each of you to explore Compendex, if you haven't already, and to recommend it to your students.  It is available from the Pius XII Memorial Library's web site http://www.slu.edu/libraries/pius/.

If you have any questions about Compendex, please contact me.

Spring Semester....

With this semester in the process of winding down and the new semester coming quickly, I would request of those

of you teaching this Spring to:

1) Please include the following information on your syllabus or on your WebCT site: Chet Bunnell, 977-3594 or
bunnellcs@slu.edu

Your students may contact me at any time for information, research assistance or library questions that they may have.

2) Please link to one of the subject specific resource guides that relates to your class
<http://www.slu.edu/libraries/pius/resguides/resguides.html>. These will provide many useful
references for students to begin their research.

3) I would be very willing to consult with you about any research project that you students will be doing and to offer assistance to possible resources to assist them

Electronic Reserves Reminder…

Please remember that Pius Library offers E-Reserves through our homepage!

If there is an article or essay that you would like you entire class to use, we can mount the article electronically and make it available only to your students. In addition, we will take care of the copyright compliance issues.

For additional information, contact Lora Mueller, Electronic Reserves Coordinator, (314) 977- 3585.

ILLiad

Our Interlibrary Loan service, ILLiad, is working extremely well. If you haven’t made use of it, or referred your students to it, you should check it out for your search needs..

ILLiad allows you to retrieve materials from other libraries when Pius Library doesn’t own it or our copy is not available. If you request an article, you may request that the article be sent to you electronically. When you request electronic delivery of articles or papers, ILLiad will notify you by email when the material is ready. You can then logon to ILLiad and download the item. This process assures that your email will not be overloaded.

The first time that you use ILLiad, click on First-Time Users and fill out the New User Registration form. You need to fill out the form once. After that ILLiad will automatically fill in your personal information for each request.

Please note that there is no charge to faculty members; however, at times we need to charge students. We always attempt to get students the materials they need for free. But if we will be charged for an item, we need to charge the student for the material. Students are always notified ahead of time and have the option of refusing the charge. Of course, if they refuse the charge, they will not get the material that they needed.

If you have any questions, please contact me at bunnellcs@slu.edu or 977-3594.

Information Literacy Standards

The American Library Association has prepared a statement on information literacy for science and technology consisting of five standards and twenty-six performance indicators plus numerous outcomes.  These represent
skills and ability that students will need during their college days and our graduates will need after they leave
here.  Our graduates will be faced with an ever increasing amount of information to weed though.  These skills
will provide them with an excellent starting point to deal with this influx of information.

The five standards are as follows:

The information literate student:

    1. determines the nature and extent of the information needed and constructs a course of action for
        obtaining the information;
    2. procures needed information effectively and efficiently;
    3. critically evaluates the procured information and its sources, and as a result, decides whether or not to
        modify the initial query and/or seek additional sources;
    4. understands and respects the economic, ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of
       information and its technologies and either as an individual or as a member of a group, uses
       information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose;
    5. recognizes the need to keep current regarding new developments in his or her field and understands that
       information literacy is an ongoing process and an important component of lifelong learning.

More detailed information can be found at the following URL: http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/infolitscitech.htm

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss these with you how we might weave these into the Parks College curriculum!
